Lijstjes

Ze zijn er weer, de eindejaarslijstjes. Mooiste CD’s, beste restaurants, beste toneelvoorstellingen, maar vooral heel veel lijstjes met de mooiste boeken van 2011. Gelukkig zijn onze boeken ook dit jaar weer veelvuldig genoemd. The New York Times was de eerste, in haar Top-100 stonden behalve Murakami (lees die auteur) en Fukuyama ( een van de meest vooraanstaande denkers van dit moment) ook Glen Duncan met De laatste weerwolf (‘The challenge for any writer working within an established genre, especially a genre with a reputation for high camp, is to bring something new to the table while adhering to tradition. On both points, Duncan scores high Marks. … ‘Come to feel endemic to Duncan’s glorious, chatty project and the morally and physically ambiguous character he’s created. I can’t help thinking that wry, world-weary Jake Marlowe would make a fabulous dinner companion. Just not during a full moon.’).

Ali Smith scoort ook hoog met Als niet dan zou. Het Amerikaanse boekenvakblad Publishers Weekly zet haar in de Top 10 voor 2011 ( ‘Her playful, breathlessly ebullient style that make this book a gem.’), maar ook The Guardian (‘Ali Smith's gleaming There but for the took the biscuit this year.’en ‘A brilliant title for a brilliant novel.’) en The Independent ( ‘a soaring, swooping novel of belonging, community and alienation’) vinden haar roman tot het beste van 2011 behoren.

Justin Cartwright, Andermans geld, blijft ook niet onopgemerkt. ‘Droll, sharp and deftly-crafted tale of private bankers and public downfall: an astute alignment of social satire and family saga.’ wordt deze hoogst actuele roman door The Independent genoemd, en ook op de lijst van de beste boeken van 2011 van The Guardian staat deze roman, ‘a believable, fictional private bank on the brink of destruction’.

Twee persoonlijke favorieten buiten ons fonds? Julian Barnes won volkomen terecht de Man Booker Prize voor zijn roman Alsof het voorbij is en Claire Tomalin voor haar biografie over Charles Dickens.
